What is ISSight?

ISSight is a free scientific and educational tool that professional and amature satellite trackers can use to make visual observations of the International Space Station (ISS) as it passes overhead. The ISS has wowwed young and old alike as it dominates the night sky as it passes overhead. There are numerouse resources such as Heavens-Above that can guide any amature star/satellite gazer towards finding the best time and place to spot one of these amazing passes. ISSight is a place where novices and professionals alike can share their observation data that can then be used to determine the orbital dynamics of the ISS. These dynamics can tell us about the space environment and maneuvers that the ISS makes over time.

Historically, collecting ground-based hand-collected observations of passing satellites were accomplished through a well coordinated effort utilizing a starmap and wristwatch or with a compass and a protractor. Today, using mobile devices such as an iPhone or iPad, we can simply point-and-tap to collect this observational data. The ISS Track App will help you easily collect this handheld data. It also makes it a snap to upload your observations into our sophisticated orbital mechanics algorithms that utilizes oservations from around the world to solve for the current orbital elements of the ISS.
